Looking back to the Opening Ceremony of Junior Eurovision 2016

Posted

Two weeks ago the opening ceremony of the 2016 Junior Eurovision Song Contest took place in Valletta's Manoel Theatre. Delegations from the 17 participating countries walked the red carpet ahead of the occasion which marks the official start of the Junior Eurovision event week.

During the opening ceremony the draw for the opening and closing songs was held. Ireland was drawn to open with Georgia closing. The allocation draw to determine which songs would be performed in first and second half of the show also took place. During the evening Destiny, who won Junior Eurovision for Malta last year, performed her winning song Not My Soul as well as the official theme song for 2016, Embrace. Gaia Cauchi, Malta's very first Junior Eurovision winner from 2013, also performed during the show.

The question hat

During the opening ceremony all participating artists picked questions from a hat. These ranged from questions about winning to hobbies and dream duets. Check out part one below:

In the second part of our interviews with the participants of Junior Eurovision we asked the performers which songs are their favourites from the 2016 competition as well as their favourite songs in general. Some of the artists even sang their respective entries for us. Check out the video below:

The opening ceremony was an opportunity for all the participating delegations to get to meet for the first time and for the artists to get to know each other. The venue for the evening, the Manoel Theatre, is one of the oldest in Malta and opened in 1732. It provided the perfect setting to welcome the participants of Junior Eurovision 2016 to Malta. You can re-watch the full show, which was broadcast by PBS Malta, below.
